Legend

Legend tells us that Pineau des Charentes is the result of serendipity. In 1589, when Henry IV ascended to the throne of France, during the harvest a Charentais winemaker accidentally poured, the grape must into a barrel containing cognac. He put this barrel in the cellar of the estate. A few years later, during a bumper harvest the barrel was required.  He was surprised to discover a wonderful drink, clear and sunny.  Pineau des Charentes was born.

Pineau des Charentes is a fortified wine AOC (controlled region) since 12 October 1945, produced in the same production area as its big brother - Cognac.

Pineau is made from a mixture of grape must and Cognac, containing at least 60° from the same vineyard.  Only a wine distiller can produce Pineau.  Its alcohol content is between 16° and 22°, but is generally 17°.

In order that the Pineau is perfectly balanced, smooth and pleasant to drink a minimum period of aging is required before it can be sold.

Pineau des Charentes is available in two colors :

White Pineau

From the following grape varieties : Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard, Semillon, Sauvignon or the Montil.  Its minimum age is 18 months including 12 in oak barrels.

Of course, a longer period cannot harm its development.  After 5 years it is called Old Pineau, and after 10 years it can claim the name of very old Pineau, where the aromas of candied fruits, figs, apricots and prunes become predominant.

Pineau Blanc is a perfect accompaniment to foie gras and blue cheese.

 Red or pink Pineau

Produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec grapes.  The required minimum age is 14 months including eight in oak barrels.

Red or Rosé Pineau accompanies the Charentais melon, fruit salad or a sorbet and expresses its full aroma of a chocolate dessert.

Generally, Pineau Blanc, Rosé or Red are consumed as an aperitif at a temperature of between 6 and 10 and is perfect for many cocktail recipes.

Storage

Once bottled, the Pineau des Charentes does not age any further. Prolonged storage in the cellar does not therefore provide additional quality.

It is very important to keep the bottles upright. After opening, the Pineau will keep safely in the refrigerator in an upright position.
